July 26 & 27, 2008

By popular request (demand?) of prior participants, the route has been changed.

Aside from popular demand, the route change is intended to emphasize the wealth of gifts of
nature that exist within Los Tuxtlas - and our responsibility to work together to protect them
all, not only Lake Catemaco.

We will visit the community of Miguel Hidalgo,  hiking through the forest and enjoying waterfalls and
rivers.

The
registration fee for the hike this year is $50.00 pesos per person. Children 12 years and younger
enter free. The fee includes three meals (lunch, dinner, and breakfast), purified water, a document of
participation, a raffle ticket - and an unforgettable experience. At the end of this page you will find
complete information and recommendations for the hike.

You can't miss this new adventure!
DEMATAC  wants to do something different for this hike, so we invite all of you to participate in the contest:

“Invent a phrase about the environment”

What does it involve?

It is very
easy!!!

You invent a phrase about the forest, conservation of natural resources, wildlife, etc. The phrase must be
concerned with the environment. The  DEMATAC Board of Directors will select the most
"awesome"
phrase.

The winning phrase will be printed on T-shirts used by DEMATAC members and to be sold during the hike
to raise funds. The
prizes for the winning phrase will be a cap, a t-shirt, a pin and a winner's
congratulatory document from DEMATAC.  So, become inspired, because you have from
today until
May 31
to send us your phrase and participate in the contest.

Send your phrase to:
lostuxtlas@dematac.org
Another challenge for "Hike 2008"

Help us to decide which photo will be representative of this years hike. Select one of the following photos. The one with the
most votes will be printed on t-shirts, along with the winning phrase from:

“Invent a phrase about the environment”

Send us an email to:  lostuxtlas@dematac.org with the number of the photo you like best.
DEMATAC hopes that this years hike will be an adventure, a challenge, a mystery - unimaginable and unforgettable.

“Discover the 'True Treasure of the Forest' in Los Tuxtlas”

During the first day of the hike we will form teams of approximately ten persons each to find and decipher the clues that
appear along the route of the hike, to
discover the "True Treasure of the Forest" in Los Tuxtlas.

Before initiating the hike instructions for the treasure hunt will be given. There will be only one winning team
which will receive their prizes at the evening campfire.

This year we do not have the option of sleeping in cabañas. We will really be camping out. We do have permission to use a very
large riverside area as a campsite. The owner,
Felix Flores, has been kind enough to give his permission. Therefore, we suggest
you bring the following equipment:

Comfortable out door clothing (pants recommended)
One additional change of clothing
Insect repellent
Rain wear
Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
Tent
Sleeping bags
Swim wear (bathing suit)
Flashlight and/or lantern

It will be nice if  everyone brings something to share with their fellow hikers during Saturday night's campfire get together, but
preferably not small, individual bags of junk food as this generates a lot of trash.  It is better to bring fruit, large bags of bonbons
or chips, or some similar snack food.

For those who do not have camping tents, and cannot obtain them, DEMATAC has six tents (5 for 3 people & 1 for 5 people) that
we can lend to the first comers.

As in the past, DEMATAC will take responsibility for transporting your equipment to the camping site. We will also supply
drinking water, lunch and dinner Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. The property owners where we will be camping have a

"fish hatchery".
Anyone who has the desire for fresh fried fish can buy them at a reasonable price.

Don't forget that we will be accompanied on the hike by a herpetologist, a doctor, and a chiropractor, in case of any accident or
illness. Fortunately, in the previous three hikes, no serious problems requiring medical attention occurred, and we do not
anticipate any. But, we do want to be prepared.

Please note: It is strictly prohibited to wear sandals during the hike. They can cause accidents and foot injuries due
to the rough terrain.
The DEMATAC team had the job of checking out
the route of this years hike, to safeguard the
participants and to be able to make intelligent
recommendations and provide you with the
necessary details.

The hike will begin in the community of

Tebanca
, but we will all meet in the park
(zocalo) in
Catemaco at 8:00 in the
morning
(at which time the registration
fee should be paid)
and from there head for
Tabanca by motor transport. Those who have
vehicles may drive them to Tabanca. Your car
can be parked at
"Rancho El Freno" located a
little before the community of
Tebanca. More
information below.
Here you see some of the spots we will visit.
