GREAT HIKE

"SALVEMOS AL LAGO CATEMACO"
2006

It began with 110 intrepid adventurers – and ended with 9 rugged individuals.

But a success it was! We left
Catemaco at 9:30 in the morning in a light rain. After a leisurely seven hour walk we arrived
at
Las Margaritas, where we spent the night in the ecotourism cabañas. After dinner we built a campfire that the rains
immediately put out. Undaunted, we built another – under cover. After a convivial chat recounting experiences, sore feet,
and other various and assorted aches and pains, we retired for the night.

After breakfast, 32 of our party decided to return to civilization by vehicular means. Now we were 77. On the road again,
we continued our passage toward
Bahia Escondida, through the jungle and cresting the hills to enjoy views of Lake
Catemaco
and the surrounding countryside.

We reached Bahia Escondida at 1:30 p. m., where we enjoyed the midday meal prepared for us by our host Sacha Becker.
The majority of the group decided to stay at Bahia Escondida for rest and recuperation, and for some swimming. For them,
the Caminata had come to an end.

Nine of us departed Bahia Escondida en route to La Victoria. At 4:00 p. m. we arrived; nine tired but happy travelers:
Lorelei, Gaby, Oscar, Raúl, Paco, Edmundo, Rodrigo, Elsa . . . and of course, me – Jessie.

We want to give special thanks to all those who joined us from Minatitlan, Cosoleacaque, Acayucan, and Coatzacoalcos, to
our friends at Las Margaritas, to Sasha Becker of Bahia Escondida, to Eng. Toño Azuara, Director of La Reserva de la Biosfera
– Los Tuxtlas – and to those many others who gave us help and support, and who participated. In addition, we say “many
thanks” to
Jorge Cáceres, Editor of "PLANETA" Diario del Istmo and to Oscar Castelán for the publicity that generated so
much interest in the area of Coatzacoalcos – Minatitlan.

Now comrades and friends, we are anticipating
“SALVEMOS AL LAGO CATEMACO” 2007. We look forward to receiving
your suggestions and advice on how to make next year’s hike the best ever, and we hope that you all will participate again
and invite your friends. As always, you may communicate with me by telephone at (294) 943-0581, or by email at
Jessie@dematac.org.

THANKS TO ALL!!! From me and from DEMATAC!
Jessie
